Refugees and Internal Displaced People
Study e-Broad Session

April 12-23, 2010

Session Objective:By participating in this GSN study e-broad session and its online activities, students will be able to articulate the core conditions that result in creating refugees and internally displaced people.

Directions for Participation:
To participate in this study e-broad session, there are two steps:

  • The first requires you to review the information.
  • The second requires you to interact through the online discussions and the live web-conference.

Review the Information:
To participate in the Refugee and Internal Displaced People study e-broad session review the below CRS staff primary essays that your professor asigns. It is strongly recommended that students also review the following foundational document Refugee? IDP? What’s in a Name? by Daisy Francis

Interaction:
On-line discussion

  1. Sign in as a GSN Member, and select the topic "Refugees & IDP April 2010"
  2. Once you've reviewed the material and signed into the GSN, you are now ready to participate in the online discussion (to be posted) portion of the Study e-broad Session. Please use the discussion threads (assigned by your instructor) to enter your considered written reflections. Be sure to end with your name, short-hand title of your course, and institution, e.g. J. Jones, Eth. Trad., VU.
  3. Now comes the exciting part. Visit the discussion board (to be posted) regularly between April 12-23 to see how other participants are responding to the essays/video, how they are responding to what you said, and to enter your responses to them. Be sure to begin your response by identifying the person you are responding to, e.g. "In response to K. Smith, Seattle U,…." End your response with your identifier. e.g. J. Jones, Eth. Trad., VU (Note: your instructor may give you guidelines on the number and length of responses required of you.)

Live Web-Conference

  1. To help us prepare for the live web-conference we will need your help. A few days before the web-conference, your instructor will ask you to submit to him/her some of the burning, unresolved questions and issues that you think require further discussion and analysis. Your instructor will pass them along to the university's site administrator or their CRS contact. These will become the basis for launching the live, interactive web-conference discussion. During the live web-conference itself, you and the other participants will have the opportunity to engage in discussion with one another and the CRS staff.

  • Why is protection a critical consideration when responding to refugees or internally displaced people?
  • From what you have seen in the news, about disasters and conflicts, and based on what you just learned, what is the state of ‘protection’ in the world? Is there consensus about responding and how we should respond? Does something need to change and if so, what?⇒DISCUSS
