GSN Postponement

Dear Faculty,

Thank you for your continued support of the GSN program.  In an effort to better serve your needs we have decided to postpone the Spring GSN program and direct our attention to a series of planned improvements.  If you have any additional feedback or suggestions that you recommend, please email me at campus@crs.org.

Based on your feedback, we know that faculty need significant notice for the topics, resources and dates for the GSN session.  We are pleased to announce that session I of the

Fall 2013 GSN program is now available:

·        "After the Disaster - the Case of Rebuilding Haiti, Pakistan, Guatemala and Elsewhere"

• "Humanitarian Operations in Conflict Settings: The Case of  Emergency Response in Syria"

We’ll send you more information regarding improvements to the GSN program. While there will not be a GSN session in Spring 2013, we invite you to consider using  some of the best resources from past GSN sessions for your Spring courses.  You'll find the links listed below.

Integral Human Development

·         Integral Human Development - the concept and the framework (a short introduction).

·         A User’s Guide to Integral Human Development. This captures the content of the short doc above, but with extensive notes for practical application of IHD in various settings overseas.

·         “Savings & Internal Lending Communities/ SILC: A Basis for Integral Human Development” (G. Vanmeenan: CRS, 2006). Using the SILC program as a case study, this doc illustrates how the IHD model takes shape in a micro-enterprise program for women. Also points out the on-the-ground connection to principles of Catholic Social Teaching.

Shows how CRS and local organizations developed an effective partnership-model to create a program to transition a community from an emergency food-aid program into self-sufficiency/ food-security.

 Peacebuilding

·         “Extractives & Equity: An Introductory Overview and Case Studies from Peru, Angola and Nigeria” (T. Bamat, A. Chassy, R. Warne, eds.: CRS, 2011). Examining the extraction of minerals in Peru, oil and diamonds in Angola, and oil in Nigeria, this document illustrates the social, political, and economic complexities that must be considered in working with local communities to mitigate the negative impact of these industries on the poor.
